Framespotting defined | FramingGodmother.com

Framespotting is a made up term that describes a robust interest in observing picture frames.

It has also been made up and used in a few other cases.

I use the hashtag #framespotting on Instagram when I post photos of groovy frames I find in situ. There are other Instagramers using it to show movie stills, and yet another guy wrote a book called Framespotting that is about the way we view life.

Framingspotting is a life choice.

The concept of the framespotting pastime seems self-explanatory, however, I’m all about teaching.

So, allow me to give you a visual.

As you can see, it’s not complicated.

Similar to birdwatching, it pays to place yourself physically in an area rich with the intended things to spot.

If birdwatching, you might set up shop in a marsh or along a migratory path.

For framespotting, I recommend museums.

In the photo above, I was at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The array of frames on display there is mindblowing. Practically everywhere you turn, there’s something to observe. Extraordinary, yes?

I realize I’m being obvious.

As one with experience in custom framing, if you have a keepsake you are considering framing and you have no idea what would look best, you have two options available to you.

  1. Go to a frame shop near you and rely on the expertise of the staff.
  2. Visit a museum and look for art that is similar in style to what you want framed, and see how the curators chose to display it.

Granted the walls of your living room might not be draped with red damask, but you’ll be surprised by the ideas you will come away with.
